Prof. Royalty teaches biblical studies and early Christianity, sociology of religion, particularly apocalypticism, and critical theory. He has led immersion trips with Wabash students to Israel / Palestine (2014) and Turkey (2003, 2010). His research in early Christianity includes the Apocalypse or Book of Revelation and the development of early Christian "heresy." During his most recent sabbatical leave, he spent a semester teaching at Harlaxton College in Lincolnshire, England and a semester as a Visiting Scholar in the Classics Department at Stanford University. He was a fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center in 2005-2006. He is currently working on religious tourism in the US. He came to Wabash College in 1999 after teaching at Stanford in Religious Studies and first-year humanities courses for five years. He is a board member of the International Society of Heresy Studies.
